Occupational Summary:
The Financial Aid Counselor provides guidance and support to students and their families in understanding and navigating the financial aid process. This role involves assessing financial aid eligibility, processing applications, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, and offering expert advice on available funding options. The counselor works closely with students to explain various financial aid programs, assists with the application process, and resolves any issues or discrepancies. The Financial Aid Counselor is committed to helping students access the financial resources necessary for their education while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards. Additionally, the role involves outreach, education, and collaboration with other departments to ensure a seamless and efficient financial aid experience.

Work Performed:

  1. Prepare, analyze, and evaluate student financial aid records including verifications and student eligibility requirements.
  2. Prepare and evaluate student aid packages, including the management and maintenance of outside scholarships.
  3. Provide advice and counsel regarding available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements and the application process.
  4. Understand and uphold financial aid policies that support the institution’s goals, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and manage and reconcile federal, state, and institutional fund processes.
  5. Assist with maintaining and updating the University information system in relation to financial aid needs.
  6. Participate in professional organizations including attending workshops, conferences, webinars, and other training opportunities. (KASFAA, RMASFAA, NASFAA, FSA)
  7. Facilitate workshops on the financial aid process as needed.
  8. Assist with on-campus recruitment activities as needed.
  9. Complete all University-required trainings including Title IX and FERPA.
  10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  1. A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  2. At least one year of experience in financial aid, higher education, or a related field, with strong mathematical skills.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  4. Basic proficiency in the use of computer and software programs.
  5. Ability to stay composed in stressful situations and handle confidential information with care and discretion.
  6. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
  8. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
