Head Cross Country Coach

Occupational Summary:

The Head Cross Country Coach will provide support and assistance with all aspects of the intercollegiate cross country program. The Coach will instruct student athletes in the rules and fundamentals of cross country while also working to develop the whole student both in and out of the classroom.

Work Performed:

  1. Recruiting and retaining qualified NCAA Division II student-athletes (in accordance with NCAA bylaws)
  2. Instruct student-athletes in the areas of physical health, team concepts, and safety
  3. Work with Strength and Conditioning coaches to oversee the conditioning and weight training of student-athletes to ensure they are physically prepared for competition
  4. Assist in promoting the general health and safety of student-athletes, including the development of psychological, social, and mental skills necessary for the student athletes to be successful in the classroom and in future endeavors
  5. Work with the Admissions Department to expedite the registration, admission, and other administrative processing of all student-athletes
  6. Demonstrate a working knowledge of and ability to comply with all NCAA Division II, MIAA Conference, and institutional rules and regulations
  7. Oversee the development of rosters, game strategies, and individual work-out and practice needs for various student athletes
  8. Serve as a positive role model for the student-athletes by exhibiting ethical and professional conduct at all times
  9. Represent Newman University at various civic events throughout the community
  10. Cooperate with Newman University personnel for efficient utilization of shared facilities
  11. Complete all University-required trainings including Title IX and FERPA
  12. Contribute to the overall success of the Athletics Department by performing all other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position

Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  1. Bachelor’s degree preferred
  2. Must possess a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle check
  3. Ability to recruit and retain qualified student-athletes and to facilitate timely progress toward graduation
  4. Effective leadership and strong oral and written communication skills
  5. Thorough knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations and ability to pass the NCAA Division II recruiting test prior to beginning duties (Certification must occur on an annual basis Bylaw 11.5.1.1)
  6. Ability to work with diverse community of students, faculty, administrators and members of the off-campus population
  7. Ability to operate a program within budget parameters
  8. Ability to raise funds within the community
  9. Ability to objectively evaluate physical skills in the areas of physical potential and mental capability for intercollegiate athletics
  10. Working knowledge of the rules of collegiate cross country and the ability to teach the critical skills required to compete at the collegiate level
  11. Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary
  12. Must have current training in First aid and CPR

Physical Requirements: (Indoor/Outdoor)

  1. Demonstration of appropriate skills may involve strained muscles or orthopedic related injuries from running and sprinting on various terrains
  2. Position requires durability
  3. Health and safety factors to be considered include injuries from field/court related activities and training responsibilities

(See Bylaw 10 for more specific ethical-conduct standards that apply to all institutional staff members and student-athletes.)

Institutional staff members found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension of pay or termination of employment for significant or repetitive violations, whether such violations occurred at the certifying institution or during the individual’s previous employment at another member institution.  It shall be the responsibility of the head coach to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and to monitor the activities regarding compliance of all assistant coaches and other administrators within the program who report directly or indirectly to the head coach (Bylaw 11.1.2).
