General Description:

The Student Minister is a student who works in conjunction with the Chaplain and staff of the Campus Ministry Office to develop and enhance the spiritual life of the Newman University community. Student Ministers must keep scheduled office hours of at least two hours per week in addition to attendance at events for a total of roughly 8 hours per week.

Code of Conduct for Student Ministers:

Because the position of student minister is a direct reflection of the Office of Campus Ministry (CMO) and the mission of strengthening our Catholic identity, there is an extra level of professionalism that comes along with the role. A Student Minister must abide by the following guidelines:

  1. Respect the confidential nature of their work in the CMO
  2. Dress in a way that reflects a professional environment 
  3. Conduct themselves, both in words and action, in a Christian manner and encourage any guests to maintain that same respect
  4. Be active in their faith tradition and be able to express their faith with sincerity; their lifestyle must reflect Gospel values

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve on the Campus Ministry Board
  2. Attend the workday/retreat prior to the fall semester and a weekly scheduled meeting
  3. Attend Campus Ministry retreats, service trips, and large monthly events
  4. Regularly attend and promote an environment of hospitality at Campus Ministry events, service opportunities, and liturgical services
  5. Lead a committee group made up of volunteer student board members, with the aim to assist in brainstorming and planning the year’s social events and service opportunities
  6. Lead or participate in a Bible Study
  7. Serve as advocates of the Campus Ministry mission and core values
  8. Promote Campus Ministry events and values through Campus Ministry social media accounts, bulletin board, website, and newsletter
  9. Recruit and schedule liturgical ministers and accompanists for Mass
  10. Plan a spring break service trip and one fall and one spring retreat
  11. Coordinate and attend the Sunday evening Mass regularly at Newman
  12. All other duties as appointed by the Director or Assistant Director of Campus Ministry

Position Requirements:

  1. Continued full time undergraduate student status (minimum of 12 credit hours)
  2. Ability to effectively manage time and various commitments
  3. Ability to listen and interact with others on a professional and pastoral level
  4. Have a good working knowledge of the Catholic faith
