The Assistant Women’s Softball Coach provides support and assistance with all aspects of the intercollegiate softball program. This position instructs student‑athletes in the rules and fundamentals of softball while also working to develop the whole student both in and out of the classroom.


What You’ll Do

  • Support the Head Coach in the daily operation of a competitive NCAA Division II softball program
  • Plan, conduct, and assist with practices, skill instruction, and game‑day strategy
  • Recruit and retain qualified student‑athletes in alignment with NCAA and university standards
  • Mentor student‑athletes in academic success, personal development, and leadership
  • Collaborate with Athletic Performance staff on conditioning programs to enhance performance and reduce injury risk
  • Ensure compliance with all NCAA Division II, MIAA, and institutional rules
  • Coordinate with Admissions, Compliance, and other campus departments to support student‑athlete enrollment and eligibility
  • Assist with camps, clinics, community engagement activities, and fundraising events
  • Contribute to team travel planning and occasional team transportation
  • Serve as a positive role model who reflects Newman University’s mission, values, and commitment to inclusive excellence
  • Complete required trainings (Title IX, FERPA, Diversity, etc.) and support departmental initiatives

What We’re Looking For

  • Collegiate playing or coaching experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of softball techniques, strategy, and skill development
  • Ability to teach, motivate, and care for student‑athletes holistically
  • Strong communication, organizational, and relationship‑building skills
  • Understanding of (or ability to quickly learn) NCAA Division II rules
  • Ability to evaluate talent and recruit student‑athletes who will succeed academically and athletically
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and pass a motor‑vehicle check
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification per NCAA requirements
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree

Physical Requirements

  • Combination of office work and outdoor practice/field responsibilities
  • Ability to demonstrate softball skills, which may involve physical exertion
  • Exposure to outdoor weather, field conditions, and minor environmental hazards
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. of equipment

Expectations

Institutional staff members found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as outlined in NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension of pay or termination of employment for significant or repeated violations, whether such violations occurred at the certifying institution or during the individual’s previous employment at another member institution. It is the responsibility of the head coach to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and to monitor the activities of assistant coaches and other administrators within the program who report directly or indirectly to the head coach (Bylaw 11.1.2).
